Crosscurrents: Art of the Southeastern Congo, SCMA Catalogue
Inspired by three objects in the SCMA collection, a Luba ceremonial axe and a pair of Songye prestige stools, this exhibition explores how neighboring peoples – in this case the Luba, Songye and Hemba peoples, who live along or near the Lualaba River in the southeastern region of the Congo - interacted with each other in their artistic production, while still retaining characteristic modes of expression.
The publication includes essays by Dr. John Pemberton III, the Museum’s curatorial consultant for African art and guest curator of the exhibition, and Linda Muehlig, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs. The introduction is by Jessica Nicoll, Director and Louise Ines Doyle '34 Chief Curator at SCMA.
